Schruns (700 - 2400 m)

The main town of the Montafon is surrounded by the mountain ranges of Verwall and Rätikon. Schruns has a varied touristic offer. Here ends the railway “Montafonerbahn” and is the starting point of the public buses to the other towns in the valley.

“Rather a nice little town, than a village, the first village of Vorarlberg which has become the first famous tourist attraction, by the way, the most visited tourist station of the country” – already wrote the Swiss writer I.C. Heer about 100 years ago. In 1926 the famous writer and „Nobel-award-winner“ Ernest Hemingway stayed at Hotel Taube in Schruns for 3 months. His impressions are reflected in his famous book “Snow on the Kilimanjaro”.

In 1928 Schruns received the title „Marktgemeinde“. An important reason was the well-known cattle market, where thousands of the famous “Braunvieh” were presented. This is shown in the coat of arms – the jumping bull in golden-blue escutcheon, below the crossed keys of the old coat of arms of the valley.

Schruns has a size of 1804.47 ha and a population of about 3900 inhabitants. Up until World War II it was a rural village. Together with the neighbouring village Tschagguns tourism started growing since 1947 (Hochjochbahn, modernising of restaurants, creation of sporting areas, hiking trail system, Aktivpark and much more)

Tschagguns (700 - 2200 m)

Tschagguns is situated approximately in the middle of the Montafon valley, south of the river Ill. The village is easily reachable by the main road from Bludenz all year round. The village has its own railway station. The Montafonerbahn operates as connection to the Arlberg railway between Bludenz and Schruns.

The community area of Tschagguns has a size of 57,68 km² with app. 2600 inhabitants. The village covers a wide area, has several outside plots and reaches from 650 to 1200 m in altitude. The church is situated on 684 m and the highest point of the community is at 2835 m, the summit of the mountain “Drusenfluh”.

Tschagguns lays in the mountain range “Rätikon”, in which 2 large valleys are located, the Gauertal with Rasafei river (Lindauer Hütte) and Gampadelstal with Gampadels river (Tilisunahütte). The Gauertal is known as one of the most beautiful valleys in the west Alps – famous with the “3 towers”!

Gasthof Löwen in Tschagguns is more than 500 years old and was a meeting point for smugglers for a long time. Today the old rooms invite to a pleasant and sociable stay.

The symbol of Tschagguns is the pilgrimage church “Maria Geburt” from the 15th century.
